I used to have a sign-up program installed and running on my own server. Here was the text:

After signing up, you will receive a confirmation message by email telling you that you have been successfully subscribed to the newsletter. If you do not receive this email message within a couple of hours, it means that the system was unable to send email to the address that was entered (or that you entered a different email address than the one you were receiving mail at). Just sign up again and be sure to type in your email address carefully and make sure it is your current and correct email address.
